never blame a woman

June 30, 2013

Once Eve began to look at the fruit the way Satan wanted her to, she began to desire it. She “saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise” (Gen. 3:6). She then ate of the fruit. Apparently nothing happened instantly, and Eve began to think that the lie of the serpent was the truth. So she went to Adam and gave him some fruit, and he ate too. Then things changed immediately.

It was Adam’s sin that was determinative. The Scriptures teach that Eve was deceived. She had been confused and duped into eating the fruit, but there was no excuse for Adam. Adam sinned knowingly: “It was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being quite deceived, fell into transgression” (1 Tim. 2:14). Adam was the head of the race. He was the head of the family. His was the decision that made the difference. It was only after he ate that their eyes were opened. Would the entire race have fallen if Adam had not eaten? We can only guess at the possible outcome. The sobering fact remains that Adam did eat the fruit, and we have been living with the consequences ever since.

got milk

June 29, 2013

You know the caps that go on top of a milk jug, when those caps come out of the mold they have rough edges on them where they were attached to the stems of the plastic mold.

After they are cut from the stem mold they are dropped into a giant stainless steel box and violently shook. The friction of them rubbing against each other takes off the rough edges from the plastic stem mold.

Before that process each cap used to be cut off by hand by a person with a trimming knife, the factory deemed it to slow and not cost effective; thus the automated process.

Now for our bible verse

Proverbs 27:17

New International Version (NIV)

17 As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another.

Did you ever wonder why certain people (usually other Christians) bother the heck out of you? You know the people you meet that (pardon the pun) rub you the wrong way, rob you of joy, hack you off, grind your grapes, you get the idea.

And it disturbs you, you pray about it and still they manage to cause you to get mad, frustrated, maybe even lead you to acting not very spiritually, in your head you are cussing them out, or thinking ‘man I hope they get hit by a train’ (go ahead admit it, there is someone out there that just manages to make you go rabid).

Well don’t worry, it’s God, people come into our lives to rub us the wrong way, and if we have the foreknowledge or insight to recognize that then the correct response is to pray. “Lord, what still exists in my nature that is still not Christ like; you have obviously brought this person into my life to make me aware of something in me you wish to change or conquer in my own spirit or attitude.”

You would be amazed at what happens next, if you are sincere either those people disappear ( not in a body bag ) or they no longer bother you, because you’ve allowed the Holy Spirit to prayerfully make a change in you.

If you don’t make a change God will keep bringing the same annoying kind of person back into your life until you grow up more in what you should be in Him.

So like a Band-Aid, tear it off fast or take it slow, it’s up to you how often you will repeat the lesson.

God bless

HOW WE PRAY

While some people today think prayer ought to be very formal, the Bible documents that people prayed in many different circumstances. They prayed wearing sackcloth (Ps. 35:13), sitting in ashes (Job 1:20–21; 2:8), smiting their breasts (Luke 18:13), crying tears (Ps. 6:6), throwing dust on their heads (Josh. 7:6), tearing garments (1 Kings 21:27), fasting (Deut. 9:18), sighing (Ezra 9:4–15), groaning (Ps. 6:4–6), crying out loud (Heb. 5:7), sweating blood (Luke 22:44), agonizing with broken hearts (Ps. 34:18), making a vow (Acts 18:18), making sacrifices (Ps. 20:1–3), and singing songs (Acts 16:25).

And you thought it was just kneeling or quietly, guess again.

Pray today however, whenever, whatever, just pray, kind of like the milk slogan; ‘does a spirit good’.

splitting hairs

Splitting hairs

No it’s not a rock band, the other day I mentioned about doing bible study and commentaries, and study bibles. One good rule about commentaries and study bibles, go with the majority, when one commentary or study bible goes against the historical majority you can safely bet that the minority are wrong. Same with radio and tv preachers. J. Vernon Mcgee rightly says; “that one with God is a majority.” But not so with other’s who opinion is in the minority.

Case in point Gen 1:2.

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Most commentaries state that the word, ‘was’ is a very important translation and should not be construed in any state as possibly to be translated as the word ‘had become’ has some commentators translate this phrase.

What’s the big deal, simple, a whole theory (falsely premised) based on the word choice, ‘had become’ sprang (don’t get to use that word very often) a false theory of biblical evolution, or false interpretation causing some to promote ‘the gap theory’.

In this theory there is a historical gap, between verse one and verse two; and some preach major events happened in this supposed ‘gap of time’; some promote that this is when Lucifer fell, others promote this was the age of dinosaurs; others that God wasn’t happy with His first attempt at the world and decided to start over.

Whereas the word ‘was formless’ means nonexistent, which fits the translation of verse one, and the word ‘created’ Hebrew the word; ‘bara’ and the theological construct of ‘ex nihlo’ meaning from nothing. God spoke and from nothing; everything came into existence. A very important theological underpinning; that God is so powerful and mighty that he doesn’t need ‘cosmic stuff’ to create anything. Part of the explanation that He is Omnipotent (all powerful) is based on these two verses.

God as the all-powerful, Almighty can speak a word and the concept becomes a reality, a power that man cannot exercise and kills instantly the idea of positive confession and humans speaking something into existence.

Ok, maybe you don’t get as amped up about this kind of stuff as I do, but I live for this kind of thing.

Splitting hairs, or Omnipotence, pick one

AFTER BEING A PENTECOSTAL PASTOR FOR OVER 30 YEARS, WITH ALL THE GOOD, BAD AND STUPID STUFF THAT HAPPENS IN THE WORLD OF PENTECOST; THERE IS ONE THING I LIKE ABOUT THE MOVEMENT ABOVE ALL OTHER THINGS. AND YES, IT IS A DOUBLE EDGE SWORD.

EMOTION, COMING DOWN TO THE ALTAR TO PRAY AND SHOWING EMOTIONS, STANDING IN THE CONGREGATION AND SHOWING EMOTION, PRAYING OUT LOUD AND SHOWING EMOTION. YES IT CAN BE ABUSED, AND YES SOME PEOPLE DO IT OUT OF SHOWMANSHIP. BUT FOR THE VAST MAJORITY IT IS HONEST, HEARTFELT AND A GREAT LIFTER OF BURDENS.

IMAGINE THE OTHER EXTREME, THE CHURCH WHERE NO EMOTION IS FELT OR EXPRESSED OR EVEN ALLOWED, THE LITURGY, THE SOLEMNNESS. YES THERE IS A QUIET BEAUTY TO THE LITURGICAL ORDER. THINGS DON’T GET WILD AND CRAZY, BUT LIFE IS WILD AND CRAZY, AND BEING ABLE TO VENT EMOTIONALLY, SAFELY IN YOUR HOME CHURCH CAN BE A WONDERFUL THING.

SO IF I HAD TO CHOOSE WHICH WOULD I PREFER, TOUGH CHOICE, IT’S WHY I START MY DAY WITH ROCK AND ROLL, HEAVY METAL, AND MELLOW INTO LATE AFTERNOON WITH BACH, AND MOZART. WE HAVE A CHOICE, HOPEFULLY YOUR WORSHIP ALLOWS YOU TO BE EMOTIONALLY HONEST AND SINCERE AND IN TOUCH WITH YOUR FEELINGS AS WELL AS YOUR MIND AND EVEN YOUR PRAYER LIFE MIGHT BE ABLE TO USE AN EMOTIONAL BURST TO SPUR YOU OVER THE PIT OF DESPONDENCY OR COMPLACENCY.

I WISH I HAD A WICKED ENDING FOR THIS DEVOTION, BUT I DON’T, MY BRAIN IS WORKING HARDER THAN MY HEART AT THE MOMENT. HHMMMMMMMMM, I WONDER HOW I FEEL ABOUT THAT.

PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH

YESTERDAY I TALKED ABOUT PRAYING MORE, LONGER, BETTER, MORE OFTEN. SO TODAY I KNOW I’M GOING TO BE IN THE CAR FOR ABOUT 6 HOURS. SO PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH, I’M GOING TO TRY AND SPEND THE 6 HOURS PRAYING, WHILE I DRIVE. NO MUSIC, NO BOOK ON TAPES, SEE HOW MUCH I CAN PRAY.

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY HUGE SUCCESS, NOT REALLY, I DAY DREAMED (DANGEROUS WHILE DRIVING 85MPH). I HUMMED SONGS, AND PRAYED ON AND OFF. NOWHERE NEAR 6 HOURS. MAYBE MORE LIKE AN HOUR, I’M NOT SURE HOW MUCH ACTUAL PRAYING WENT ON.

ACCOUNTABILITY

I MENTIONED ONE ADVANTAGE OF LONG PRAYER TIMES WAS THAT IN THEORY YOU WOULD HAVE LESS CARNALITY. MORE TIME WITH GOD, LESS TIME PRACTICING CARNALITY; NOW GRANTED THIS WAS DAY ONE OF THE EXPERIMENT, BUT I HAVE TO REPORT THAT WHEN I GOT HOME LATE IN THE DAY, TWO PHONE CALLS REALLY HACKED ME OFF AND I SPENT ABOUT 5 MINUTES CUSSING AND SWEARING HORRIBLY.

THEORY, YES I BELIEVE THE PREMISE OF MY ORIGINAL ARGUMENT; SO WHAT HAPPENED? 1. A SPIRITUAL ATTACK THAT DERAILED ME (POSSIBLE) 2.PRIDE IN WHAT I WAS TRYING TO DO AND I NEEDED AN OBJECT LESSON IN HUMILITY (ALSO POSSIBLE) AND 3. JUST MY USUAL OLD SINFUL NATURE NOT BEING KEPT IN CHECK, (VERY POSSIBLE)

OR HOW ABOUT ALL THREE COMBINED.

CONFESS YOUR SINS ONE TO ANOTHER; JAMES 5:16 New Living Translation (©2007)
Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT, WE’VE ALL BEEN THERE, THREE STEPS FORWARD, TWO BACK, DO WE GIVE UP, NOPE, LET’S SEE WHAT TOMORROW BRINGS. BLESSING AND CURSES FROM THE SAME MOUTH, NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THAT WAY, BUT WE HAVE AN INTERCESSOR, AND ADVOCATE, THANK GOD, LITERALLY

THE TEMPTATION IS TO NOT TRY AGAIN, SATAN WOULD HAVE US BELIEVE WE CANNOT SUCCEED, WHICH IS TRUE IF WE GIVE IN AND GIVE UP. SO MAYBE I’LL SHOOT FOR 60 SECONDS WITHOUT RAVING LIKE A MAD MAN.

GOD BLESS.

“devote yourselves to prayer” (Col. 4:2). Continual, persistent, incessant prayer is an essential part of Christian living and flows out of dependence on God.

Seriously, how often do you pray, when do you pray, how long do you pray, these are all questions every Christian should ask.

In this present age when books like ‘the one minute manager’ and yes the one minute prayer is probably more important than actually finding time to pray for a long time, we just fall down on the job of praying for any long period of time.

What’s the big deal, guys ask your wife this question, ‘honey, would you rather have my undivided attention for one minute, or would you like to sit on the couch for an hour and cuddle’. (if she picks the first one, call me you need marriage counseling).

Long periods of prayer help us develop intimacy with God, keeps us more focused on His presence and helps curb our carnality; but only if we pray correctly.

By now if you’ve followed this devotional site with any frequency you know that I am dead set against legalism and form without function, but having a format to pray is a good thing. Scripture informs us that we often pray amiss. And there can be no victory in Spiritual warfare with being adept at praying.

The Gospels report that Jesus habitually rose early in the morning, often before daybreak, to commune with His Father. In the evening He would frequently go to the Mount of Olives or some other quiet spot to pray, usually alone.

Okay, right about now most people start feeling guilty, we have packed schedules, busy routines, commitments, kids, pets, meetings, etc. When parents bring in young kids and tell me that their kids are anxious, depressed, need Ritalin, the first thing I tell them; cut the scheduled activities in half. Almost always there’s a marked improvement in every area of their lives, including the parents.

So step one, cut some things from your schedule, even the ‘religious’ things, find some breathing room. If you have zero prayer life right now, just getting up 7 minutes earlier and praying will begin to make a difference.

no hands

June 23, 2013

LOOK NO HANDS

It’s Sunday morning, there are 100 choir members in richly colored robes, the pews are padded, the air conditioner is new and running cool. All the hymnals are new, the pulpit is the latest in technology. A worship leader every church in the area is trying to steal. Valet parking, you can even have your car washed and vacuumed during church.

The greatest worship service ends and the Pastor steps to the pulpit and in the golden voice of a great orator he proclaims; ‘it’s time for prayer, lets pray for all the people in the congregation that have sexually transmitted diseases’, (no hands), ok lets prayer for all the people with addictions, (no hands). How about all the guys out there that looked more than once at sister goodbody and that really tight skirt, (no hands). The pastor is getting desperate this isn’t working well.

Ok, lets pray for all the couples that had a fight either before church or during the ride to church, (no hands), how about all the dad’s that cussed at least once before service, (no hands).

Desperation sets in, everyone is uncomfortable, the pastor has one more shot, he knows this next one is a clincher, surely over half the congregation will raise their hands on this one.

‘Everyone that is pretending everything is all right or that you are all right, no problems, no worries, raise your hands. Guess what, not one hand goes up.

Pretending, it has to be the greatest church craze going on. Pretending the marriage is fine, the kids are fine, you’re tight with God, prayer time is magical, the Holy Spirit and you are closer than the skin on a banana.

Why do we do that, it’s keeps us from reading the Bible because we don’t want to be convicted, we won’t read the classics of religious literature because it will remind us of how much we need to grow. And so the whole religious cottage movement of fluff books and puffy sermons that are diabetic in their sugar content and gooey warmness fill the pulpits of America.

An old quote that bears repeating; “religion in American is 3000 miles wide and about ½ inch deep is probably mostly true.

Foul, you cry, stop being negative, why can’t you sound like Joel Osteen or Norman Vincent Peale for you older folks.

We do it to well, pretending we are something when we are not. A. W. Tozer’s greatest quote, (in my mind) ‘Lord give me conviction over joy, that I may know my heart still beats for you”.

Seeing how often we quote famous bands and musicians, let’s go with Eric Clapton, and the song “Pretending”.

How many times must we tell the tale?
How many times must we fall?
Living in lost memory
You just recalled

Satisfied but lost in love
Situations change
You’re never who you used to think you are
How strange

How strange indeed that we would be satisfied with mediocre, when we have the book of Ephesians telling us of the unsearchable richness of Christ;

“Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is
this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles
the unsearchable riches of Christ!” Ephesians 3:8

A vault of blessings, yet we live like beggars, never looking in the Mirror of the Word, satisfied with being comfortable, safe. We will deny ourselves even the friendship of other Christians, so our secrets can be safe.

Yes, I know that not everyone falls into this category, but lets go with the old 80/20 rule, in church economics 10% of the church congregation pays the bills. Why would it be so strange to think that 80% come and pretend everything is ok.

Peel the onion folks, start a life of examination or the Holy surgeon will start to cut away the layers, and that is one of the most painful Christian experiences you can have.

Man I can’t get the melody out of my head; ‘pretending’

THREE DIFFERENT PEOPLE I TALKED TO TODAY ALL MENTIONED THE PHRASE K.I.S.S. WHICH WE ALL KNOW AS; KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID. WELL A PART OF SPIRITUAL WARFARE THAT I SHOULD HAVE COVERED AT THE VERY BEGINNING WAS BIBLE STUDY. SO HERE ARE SOME SIMPLE HINTS TO SUCCESSFUL BIBLE STUDY

Using the three-step Bible study process—observe, interpret, and apply—you’re bound to learn new things about God.

The observe phase doesn’t require any tools beyond a copy of the Scripture itself. For interpretation, use a good study bible like John MacArthur’s study bible or the HSCB  (Holman standard Christian bible), avoid Dake’s bible, and the full life study bible, (not to be confused with the very good, Life Application Bible. I like to read a passage several times in different translations, NIV, NKJV, NLT, the original King James, the NET version of the bible is great in print or online When you reach the application phase, use the acronym SPECT to quickly identify truths to apply:

  • Is there a sin for me to forsake?
  • Is there any promise to claim?
  • Is there an example for me to follow?
  • Is there any command for me to obey?
  • Is there anything to be thankful for today?

These simple questions help you quickly examine a passage from multiple perspectives

Don’t worry about how long you study, one verse a day is better than nothing all day.

The point of the original test in the Garden was to demonstrate whether Adam and Eve would submit to God and do what He told them and believe what He said. But Adam and Eve were not content with that; they wanted to make up their own minds as to what was good and what was evil. By so doing, they acted as if they were gods because only God has the right to determine what is good and evil. When Adam and Eve attempted to use their own experience and reason without orienting it to God’s Word, they were acting as if they were gods, and the result was catastrophic for the human race.

Satan was successful in his strategy, for he cast doubt on the truthfulness of God’s Word, then on the sufficiency of God’s Word, and then on the personal integrity of God. Thus confused, Eve allowed herself to get in the position of trusting her own experience and reason to make the decision instead of simply obeying God’s Word. This is the danger point. Once we begin to doubt either the truthfulness of God’s Word or its sufficiency, we begin to rely instead on our own experience and reason. But our experience (even after all of these years) and our reason (despite our IQ and advanced education) are too limited and too affected by sin ever to be able adequately to handle Satan’s shrewd strategies. Once we get to this point, Satan can twist us around his little finger just as he did Eve.
