inside/outside

light vs darkness

Our culture teaches us that people are basically good and that their internal problems are the result of external circumstances. But Jesus taught that no outside-in program will rectify the human condition, since our fundamental problems stem from within.

(Mark 7:20-23).

7:20 He said, “What comes out of a person defiles him.7:21 For from within, out of the human heart, come evil ideas, sexual immorality, theft, murder, 7:22 adultery, greed, evil, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly. 7:23 All these evils come from within and defile a person.”

Holiness is never achieved by acting ourselves into a new way of being. Instead, it is a gift that God graciously implants within the core of those who have trusted in Christ. All holiness is the holiness of God within us—the indwelling life of Christ. Thus, the process of sanctification is the gradual diffusion of this life from the inside (being) to the outside (doing), so that we become in action what we already are in essence.

Our efforts faithfully reveal what is within us, so that when we are dominated by the flesh we will do the deeds of the flesh, and when we walk by the Spirit we will bear the fruit of the Spirit.

(Galatians 5:16-26).

5:16 But I say, live1 by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh.2 5:17 For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires3 that are opposed to the flesh, for these are in opposition to4 each other, so that you cannot do what you want. 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 5:19 Now the works of the flesh5 are obvious:6 sexual immorality, impurity, depravity,5:20 idolatry, sorcery,7 hostilities,8 strife,9 jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish rivalries, dissensions,10 factions,5:21 envying,11 murder,12 drunkenness, carousing,13 and similar things. I am warning you, as I had warned you before: Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God!

5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit14 is love,15 joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,16 5:23 gentleness, and17self-control. Against such things there is no law. 5:24 Now those who belong to Christ18 have crucified the flesh19 with its passions20 and desires. 5:25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also behave in accordance with21 the Spirit. 5:26 Let us not become conceited,22 provoking23 one another, being jealous24 of one another.

We’ve had a lot of requests to include the actual bible verses that we talk about in devotions as some folks don’t always have access to a bible.

Our bible quiz winner was Barabin S. from Denmark, she chose the NIV compact study bible, it will go out in the mail tomorrow, God bless.
