light vs darkness

“Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.” Psalm 19:12

I read an account of Michelangelo’s painting of the Sistine Chapel. In the story, he was painting in a corner behind everyone’s view, and someone said to him, “Forget that area, nobody can see it anyway.” But Michelangelo replied, “I know it’s there.” What you are in secret is what you are—nothing more, nothing less.

Through the years I’ve spoken with men and women who travel a lot, and in almost every motel there are R-rated and X-rated films available. “Nobody’s in here but me,” they say. Are you sure? Jesus is in that room. What you are in that room when you think no one is around is what you really are.

I knew a carpenter named Larry, we were renovating a pub, when we tore out the mirror and the back of the bar we found over 100 Morgan Silver dollars, one of the grunts working with us started filling his pockets. Larry stopped him and said count each coin and put them in a sack for the owner. When the grunt asked who would know, Larry said “God would” and then picked up a hammer and said “I would”. The guy got the message.

What kind of Christian are you when you are alone?

When I used to do crusades with Oral Roberts, women would ask him to take their husbands with him so they “would stay saved.” Oral always answered them: “Madam, if the Holy Spirit can’t make them behave at home, what makes you think I can make them behave 200 miles from home.”

I have a buddy that his speech is as smooth as silk around everyone at home, work, and church, but get him on the road and he would make a sailor blush.

Isaiah 29:15New International Version (NIV)

15 Woe to those who go to great depths
to hide their plans from the Lord,
who do their work in darkness and think,
“Who sees us? Who will know?”

Ezekiel 8:12New International Version (NIV)

12 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, ‘The Lord does not see us; the Lord has forsaken the land.’

Even the leaders of Israel would get to the place where they believed God wouldn’t see them.

It always amazes me that people choose darkness to hide their sins. Want to never get mugged, raped, robbed, hit by drunk, don’t go out after dark, especially after 10pm. 2000 people go missing every day.  Ever go to a strip club that had the lights turned up high?

Darkness doesn’t cover sin, nor does going out of town. God sees all and knows all.

To the believer that reads this, the Holy Spirit dwells inside you, do you really want him to see the wickedness that you are capable of? Simply saying; “God is watching should be enough to prick you conscience.”

There are no ‘secret sins’
