“A wise man was asked by a young man how he could find God. For some time the sage gave no answer, but one evening he asked the youth to come and bathe with him in the river. While there he gripped him suddenly and held his head under the water until he was nearly drowned. When he released him the wise man asked him: ‘What did you want most when you were under the water?’ ‘A breath of air,’ he replied. To which the sage answered, ‘When you want God as you wanted the breath of air, you will find Him.’

“Philippians 3:14English Standard Version (ESV)

14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Blessed are they that … seek Him with the whole heart” (Ps. 119:2).

If you notice one thing in both these verses, we have to do the work. To many Christians are waiting for some mystical revelation, some divine spark to ignite them into a dynamic spiritual event.

Every Christian will become at last what his desires have made him.

“Your desires” that should scare the snot out of you!

What are the sum total of your desires? What do you spend your time, money, resources, and efforts on?

You will get what you wish for, (sort of). Desire God and you will be rewarded.

“For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness” (Ps. 107:9)

“For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward Him” (2 Chron. 16:9).

It’s a cliché, but that’s what makes clichés true, we are what we want.

Like the little engine that could, all we have to do is want more of God, to hear from him, to be filled by him, to grow spiritually, is just a matter of wanting it.

Examine every desire and want that comes into your life, if it’s not for the things of God, reject them.

You will reap a great reward. One of my oft prayed prayers, “God, I pray that my heart beats with your heart, let there be just one heartbeat, thine alone.”
