up, up and away

June 20, 2015

For those that have been long time followers we want to reintroduce the concept and definition of Christian Mysticism so I will stop being hung in effigy in the blogosphere.

As stated earlier my definition of Christian Mysticism has no similarities to Eastern Mysticism, nor does it exist in the warped theology of Pentecost that sometimes runs amok. (Remember please that I was a Pentecostal pastor over 35 years).

Milton’s terrible sentence applies to our day as accurately as it did to his: “The hungry sheep look up, and are not fed.” It is a solemn thing, and no small scandal in the kingdom, to see God’s children starving while actually seated at the Father’s table.

The Christian Mystic simply hungers for more. Not satisfied with Liturgical Rites, a chorus that is 7 words sung 20 times or even the time tested fundamentals of faith, yes the Westminster Catechism should be taught often or Luther’s; but what does a pastor do with those that seek more. Yes experiential Christianity is probably one of the most dangerous theologies in world, yet there is a calling to walk in the high places of God’s kingdom.

It has always interested me that when the bible mentions “high places” it can something bad or something good, and as I often say; “there’s the rub.”

We can be so heavenly minded we are no earthly good, and we can be so grounded that we are spiritually short sighted. And Jesus calls us sheep for a good reason, no other animal follows the wrong path more often than sheep.

Sound Bible exposition is an imperative must in the Church of the Living God. Without it no church can be a New Testament church in any strict meaning of that term. But exposition may be carried on in such a way as to leave the hearers devoid of any true spiritual nourishment whatever. For it is not mere words that nourish the soul, but God Himself, and unless and until the hearers find God in personal experience they are not the better for having heard the truth. The Bible is not an end in itself, but a means to bring men to an intimate and satisfying knowledge of God, that they may enter into Him, that they may delight in His Presence, may taste and know the inner sweetness of the very God Himself in the core and center of their hearts, and that my friend is the quest of the sane, fundamental, biblically sound Christian Mystic.
