OH, NO HE CAN’T

August 30, 2021

Can Satan and/or his demons read our minds? No. First Kings 8:39 says that God alone knows every human heart. There is no one else who has that ability. God knows what we will say before we can say it, while the thought is still formulating (Psalm 139:4). Jesus, being God incarnate, exhibited the divine quality of knowing men’s thoughts: “He knew what was in each person” (John 2:25; cf. Matthew 9:4; John 6:64).

The Bible does teach us that Satan is powerful. Likely he was the highest of all the fallen angels, as he was persuasive enough to convince one third of the angels to join him in his rebellion (Revelation 12:4). Even after Satan’s fall, not even Michael the archangel dared to confront him without the Lord’s help (Jude 1:9). Satan is the “the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient” (Ephesians 2:2b). However, Satan’s power has its limits, and reading our minds seems to be beyond his ability.

It would take omniscience for Satan and his demons to read our minds, which they do not have. God is the only One who can know our thoughts. However, Satan and his demons have been observing and tempting human beings for thousands of years. Surely, they have learned a few things about us over the years. Even without the ability to know our thoughts, they can make a well-educated guess as to what we are thinking and then attempt to use that to their advantage. That is why we are commanded to “submit yourselves, then, to God” (James 4:7a), before we are told to “resist the devil” (James 4:7b).

And since the devil can only be in one place at a time it would be very presumptuous to think he was always after you, (aren’t you special).

PRAYING WRONGLY

August 29, 2021

“How many a child of God remains weak and timid because, instead of being occupied with what God has promised, he is considering how it can be fulfilled. But we have nothing to do with the how; it is enough that our Father has given us His Word. Whatever, therefore, may be the nature of the suffering or trial through which we have to pass, let us ever account that God is able to fulfil all His promises.

We can have a strong faith but be sighted/gazing the wrong way. We do devotions, we pray, we tithe, we go to church, support missions, the list goes on. And for some of us we think God owes us something because we have been behaving and doing all the do’s and we expect God to do something because we have been doing stuff for him.

Instead of a checking account filled with cash we have a heavenly account filled with good deeds. So God owes us.

We are weak and timid and afraid because our prayers do not seem to be answered. We go back and check our accounts and again think we are in the plus category, so God owes.

The devil plays us like a violin because we have left false teaching creep into our lives and because of our week devotional life (bible study and prayer) we do not have the discernment to discover what we are doing or believing wrong.

Two biggest things I see Christians doing wrong; first, the have bought into the lies of “kingdom living” they have been told the kingdom of God is here on earth and we can live by kingdom principles. The kingdom was offered to only the Jews when Jesus walked the earth and they rejected both him and the kingdom. There is no ‘kingdom’ here on earth. Second, they have been taught to pray wrong. Kingdom based prayers, obviously wrong. The worse part of that teaching is people who pray like that pray wrong, they order God to do things because of their faith.

God is on a leash and our faith drives him to do our bidding. SOUNDS RIDICULOUS when you say it like that but that is what is being taught. Wrong example first, “God heal this woman in the name of Jesus” think about why this is wrong but widely believed, I mean widely believed.

The right way, “Lord we ask if it is your will to heal this woman and in Jesus name we thank you that you have given us faith and your word to know what you can do.”

ATTITUDE-see the difference, which one is a humble believer or the arrogant, wrongly believe (erroneously taught) prayer.

Anyhoo, God bless and let us grow rightly as well as uprightly.

When the temple of the Lord was completed, King Solomon dedicated it with a prayer before the assembly of Israel (see 1Ki 8:22). Along with the significance to the original hearers, the prayer took on a special importance for the first readers of 1 and 2 Kings, who were living in exile after having lost the land in the very manner Solomon describes. For them, this was a call to repentance and a program for prayer. It teaches the readers how to restore their relationship with God.

Although we are not Israel, the church can use Solomon’s prayer as a call to repentance and corporate restoration. Here are a few ways we can pray like Solomon, as we see in 1 Kings 8:

➤ Acknowledge the uniqueness and faithfulness of God—Solomon begins his prayer with praise and acknowledgment of how God has been faithful in keeping the promises he made in the past (see vv. 23–26).

➤ Ask that divine punishment will lead to forgiveness—The Bible makes it abundantly clear that some natural calamities (such as drought and famine, disease) are a result of corporate sin. But Jesus also warns us against assuming we know who is to blame for such natural evil (see Lk 13:1–9). Instead of trying to identify divine punishments, we should use all tragedies to remind us of the need for repentance. We should ask that God, who alone knows our hearts, will lead us to fear him at all times (see vv. 39–40).

➤ Ask that other groups be drawn to God—We should remember also to pray for those who, like the foreigners in Israel, are outside of our own circle. This serves as a reminder that we are not merely seeking our own well-being, but the glorification of God’s name throughout the world (see v. 43).

➤ Pray for both corporate and individual forgiveness—When we pray as a group, we should remember that we have often sinned as a group. Like the Israelites, we should admit, “We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly” (see v. 47) and ask God to hear our pleas. 1 Kings 8:22

JUST ANOTHER LIE

August 27, 2021

This is going to be a different devotion than all the rest IT IS A WARNING.

There is a video going around that is expertly crafted, and I do mean crafted. It is emotional, appealing, appears intellectual, it hits all the buttons. BUT IT IS A LIE.

First let me tell you that I am qualified to make this statement. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Ancient languages, Summa Cum Laude, a Master’s in Greek, an M.Div. in Biblical Theology and Counseling Psychology, and a Ph.D. in Psychology. Plus 45 years of pastoring and teaching both Hebrew and Greek and Biblical counseling.

As you notice, my devotional page is simple, very simple. No banners, ads, archives, just text. I have something to say and I want you to read it. If it is important to you then print it out because there is no way to find it later.

HERE IS THE LIE.

The video makes you believe the sincerity, the heartfelt desire to help you, it is a miracle, the hand of God had to intervene. Well, it is all Bullshirt.

This video tells you that a certain scribe, bishop, translator, someone made a mistake and the secret to longevity, health, vitality has been hidden for hundred of years because a word for centuries has been mistranslated. The video tells you that the secret, a newly discovered word is really ‘cannabis’ not another plant that they say has no medicinal qualities and the hidden formula has been discovered. IT IS A LIE. THE WORD CANNABIS IS NOT THE MISSING WORD, OR THE HIDDEN WORD. IT IS NOT THE DISCOVERED WORD. GOD NEVER USED POT IN ANY RELIGIOUS CEREMONY AND ALL THE PATRIARCHS THAT LIVED HUNDRED OF YEARS DID NOT DO SO BECAUSE OF POT.

Whenever you see someone telling you they have a secret and it is from the bible and oh, by the way I’m going to sell you something, IT IS A SCAM. THERE ARE NO HIDDEN, UNDISCOVERED SECRETS IN THE BIBLE.

THERE ARE HIDDEN TRUTHS THAT YOU HAVE TO DISCOVER BECAUSE OF SIN AND OUR FALLEN NATURE AND OUR DARKENED MINDS NEEDING ENLIGHTENED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.

BUT THERE ARE NO SECRETS AND NEVER BELIEVE ANYBODY THAT SAYS THEY WILL SELL YOU WHAT THEY DISCOVERED IN THE BIBLE.

NOT HOLY WATER, ANOINTED CLOTHS, SPLINTERS OF THE CROSS, INDULGENCES. A PIECE OF THE SHROUD.

It is a sad testimony that people would rather believe a cleverly wrapped lie than the truth. To be fair, it is an excellent video, I wish I had the where with all to produce the truth and disseminate it like quality production like that..

CURSES

August 26, 2021

I have a friend that is very interested in word studies of the bible and how it can bring out deeper, richer meaning to a passage. With that in mind here we go.

Keep in mind that looking at words in the original language may change the nuance of a word, but when let’s say a lexicon or Hebrew or Greek word book or the Amplified version of the bible lists all these word meanings it does not mean that the ‘word’ means all of those things. Context, word order in a sentence, how the author uses that word, all influence the meaning of the word.

For example;

In Gen. 12:3 we read a very famous verse: “And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse.” Things seem to be clear, but a very important nuance is lost in translation.

God promises Abraham that, “everyone who curses him” מְקַלֶּלְךָ  (mekalelcha) will in turn “be cursed” אָאֹר (aor). The strength of this promise, however, is lost in translation. The first word for “curses” – מְקַלֶּלְךָ  (mekalelcha) comes from a root that literally means “to make light of something heavy.” The second word for “curse,” אָאֹר  (aor), actually comes from a completely different root that means something like “to utterly destroy.”

Taking these insights from Hebrew into consideration, the translation could be presented as follows:

“I will bless those who bless you, but the one who disrespects you, I will utterly destroy.”

The CSB and the NET bible come the closest to getting it right.

WOULD YOU? COULD YOU?

August 25, 2021

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12

Suppose you were told that you only had so many days left to live? Not months, not years, days.

What would be your reaction?

What would you start doing?

What would you stop doing?

What spiritual promises have you made to God and have not kept?

What promises to spouse or friends have you not kept?

Procrastination, would it end or get worse?

Would you curse God and cry?

Would you praise God and cry?

Would you brainstorm ideas on how to share your legacy: passages of Scripture, poetry, music, videos, letters, photo albums, etc. would be the means I would use to reach out into the future to continue influencing those God had entrusted me with and whom I would leave behind.

Could you find relief, pleasure, and even hope at each new idea that would allow you to continue to have influence and share your love and parts of yourself even when the part of me that is “me” is gone.

Would you, could you, how will you live out your final moments?

I had a friend that they kept telling him you have a few months to live. He lasted 12 more years.

Do you trust the Lord to really keep you during these last few moments or do rant and rave and rail against God?

I could ask you a hundred more questions all along this vein of thought, but notice I give no answers. This is the most private conversation you will have with God and a few, very few loved ones.

Do you die with dignity and faith believing or do abandon your testimony and faith in God?

What is the final picture you paint for everyone that knows you?

God bless from scumlikeuschurch@gmail.com

Sorry to be so somber. Go read a good clean joke.

Please keep in prayer all those on our prayer list and our salvation list. Pray until the end of ages, your life or the answer comes. Blessings to all that write and encourage, love the pictures of where you live or of yourself or pets or pictures of how you mark you bible, very creative. Blessings.

UNTIL THE DAY THAT I DIE

August 24, 2021

If we are to grow spiritually, we must be able to discern how we avoid God. One o pattern of avoidance is the “just a minute” syndrome. When I sit down to read Scripture, my eye will catch a magazine article that I want to read. I put down my Bible, telling myself I’ll get back to the Scriptures in just a couple of minutes. But somehow I never do. Another pattern is the “I’m too busy” syndrome. Initially, my excuse is that there is too much to do today, and I’ll get to it tomorrow. But “tomorrow” turns out to be a couple of weeks.

A.W. Tozer observed that “contemporary Christians have been caught in the spurious logic that those who have found him need no longer seek him.” Nothing could be farther from the truth. The paradox of the Christian faith is that those who know him are those who seek him. Tozer writes, “Come near to the holy men and women of the past and you will soon feel the heat of their desire after God. They mourned for Him, they prayed and wrestled and sought for Him day and night, in season and out, and when they found Him, the finding was all the sweeter for the long seeking.

You must have a plan, read any book on warfare, the art of war, chess strategy, Clausewitz on War, all great battles have a plan. Yes, you can adopt someone else’s plan, but it really helps if you come up with one of your own.

I will make one promise to you, and this is bullet proof, the deeper you go into the Word of God, the more of a spiritual hunger and thirst you will develop. Some people complain they don’t have the drive, or the ‘want to’ this is one area where only by developing the discipline will you get the reward.

It is a lot like the “katas” of martial arts, the only way you can prove to your sensei that you have progressed is to do the exact ‘steps’ of each move to show proficiency. If we must do that to show physical progress, how do we show spiritual progress?

Bible memorization is one, knowing your way around a bible, all the books of the bible, basic content of each book. If I can know a person is proficient just by how they handle a gun or a knife, I can know by the way you handle your bible. It’s ok to start your bible walk with giant gold tabs for each book or an indexed tab bible in order to learn your way around the bible.

If during a sermon I say “let’s all turn to 2 Hezekiah chapter 3” you know I am joking or testing you.

How many churches no longer have prayer meetings? Again, lack of proficiency, if people have not learned to pray then do not expect them to show up for a prayer meeting. And if they have not learned to pray then shame on the pastor.

Pray for Ethan who feels like he has lost his way.

Pray for Carrie Ann, battling prescription addiction.

Pray for Anne and Drew, salvation, but also pray for them as parents of a normal 5 year old boy that does normal 5 year old boy stuff in school but the school frowns on that kind of behavior and the punishment is harsh.

Remember the others on our salvation list; Cristina and Oscar, Hunter and Tara, Lauren, Nicole, Olivia. Norma Perales and husband Rick and adult son Rick Jr.

I sometimes get asked how long do you pray for their salvation, until either you die or they do or they get saved.

SEEK WISE COUNSEL

August 23, 2021

The most famous legal ruling in history involved two prostitutes and a baby. Having been promised wisdom by God, Solomon will now have this wisdom tested by deciding which of the two women is the true mother of the child. The king produces his own evidence by testing the compassion and maternal instincts of the women. When he orders the baby to be cut in two, the real mother becomes apparent: she is the one who is willing to give up her child to save him from harm (see 1Ki 3:26–27).

The decisions we’re called on to make are rarely so difficult or dramatic. But like Solomon, we’re called to apply wisdom in the choices we make. Here are four tips for making wise decisions:

  1. Determine applicable Biblical principles—The first consideration in making a decision is to search out what God has said on the topic. Even when the Bible doesn’t directly address an issue we can often discern and apply a Biblical principle through analogy.

  2. Acquire the relevant information—Decision-making requires we obtain the relevant information. But oftentimes we short-circuit the process by assuming the information we receive is sufficient. But as Proverbs says, “In a lawsuit the first to speak seems right, until someone comes forward and cross-examines” (Pr 18:17). Make sure you’ve asked enough questions and uncovered enough facts to make a prudent decision.

  3. Assess your motives—“All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the LORD” (Pr 16:2). Consider the motives—both good and bad—that might be driving your decision. Ask someone you trust to help point out your blind spots and the factors you might not have considered.

  4. Seek wise counsel—“For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers” (Pr 11:14). Because we’re part of the body of Christ, we’re never expected to face the challenges of life alone. Similarly, we’re not expected to rely solely on our own wisdom. Seek out the help and guidance of other believers who are mature and wise. 1 Kings 3:16

Remember Steve H in prayer, strength and health, encouragement, guidance for both him and the church as they wait on the Lord to bring them a new pastor. For his wife Pam, healing of chronic knee pain.

Keep Killean in prayer, PTSD, traumatic shock, psychological distress. DA says absolutely no charges will be filed.

Pray for Caroline M, husband passed today, 56 years of marriage. He had a long battle with Alzheimer’s

Pray for Paul K, shoulder and knee problems.

WARNING ADULT CONTENT AND LANGUAGE IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED PLEASE DO NOT PROCEED.

AFFAIR PROOF YOUR MARRIAGE.

BEING BOTH A PASTOR AND A PSYCHOLOGIST I AM ALWAYS AMAZED AT THE WAY MARRIED COUPLES HAVE RUINED THEIR MARRIAGES.

LOOKING BACK AT MY FIRST YEAR IN PRIVATE PRACTICE I AM AMAZED NOW THAT I WAS NOT SLAPPED WITH A LAW SUIT OR SLAPPED IN THE FACE. OF COURSE WE ARE TALKING OVER 40 YEARS AGO AND THINGS WERE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

MY FIRST PROBLEM I WAS NAÏVE ENOUGH TO BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE COMING IN FOR COUNSELING WOULD BE TELLING THE TRUTH.

MY SECOND PROBLEM ALSO FROM BEING NAÏVE IS THINKING NO ONE WOULD EVER WANT TO SEDUCE ME. I’M AVERAGE EVERYTHING, NOW GRANTED 40 YEARS AGO I WAS A BODY BUILDER AND LOOK TOTALLY DIFFERENT THAN I DO TODAY.

THIRD PROBLEM IS I DID NOT UNDERSTAND COMPLETELY THAT IF YOU ARE IN A POSITION OF AUTHORITY THAT ALONE MAKES YOU DESIRABLE. YOUR LOOKS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

FOURTH, NOT REALLY A PROBLEM BUT YOU HAVE TO BE KEENLY AWARE THAT BY TRULY LISTENING AND BEING EMPATHIC TO A WOMAN IS ALSO A TURN ON BECAUSE THEIR HUSBANDS NEVER LISTEN AND THEY THINK YOU REALLY LOVE THEM.

FIFTH, THIS IS GOING TO SOUND HORRIBLE, BUT REMEMBER I WAS REALLY YOUNG AND DUMB IN MY FIRST YEAR OF COUNSELING. I THOUGHT ONLY GOOD LOOKING PEOPLE HAVE AFFAIRS. SERIOUSLY, SO WHEN A HUSBAND AND WIFE COME IN FOR COUNSELING AND THEY ARE BOTH PUSHING AROUND 450LBS EACH, I WAS SHOCKED WHEN THEY SAID THEY WERE BOTH UNFAITHFUL AND WANTED TO SAVE THEIR MARRIAGE. (EARLY IN YOUR COUNSELING CAREER YOU BETTER QUICKLY DEVELOP A POKER FACE). AND DO NOT SAY “YOU ARE KIDDING RIGHT?”

SIXTH, I DO NOT CARE HOW MUCH IT WILL COST YOU BUT BUILD YOUR OFFICE SO YOUR SECRETARY CAN ALWAYS SEE YOU. AND AUDIBLY RECORD YOUR SESSIONS, WITH THE PATIENT’S PERMISSION. THIS WILL SAVE YOU A TON OF MONEY AND YOUR REPUTATION AND SANITY. I HAD A WOMAN IN A FIT OF DESPAIR THROW HERSELF INTO MY LAP FACE FIRST, IT DID NOT LOOK GOOD. BUT MY SECRETARY WAS IN THAT ROOM IN A HEART BEAT PICKING HER UP OUT OF MY LAP AND SITTING HER BACK IN HER CHAIR. TALK ABOUT GRATEFUL.

SEVENTH, YOU BETTER HAVE THE BEST MARRIAGE IN THE WORLD AND BE CLOSER TO THE LORD THAN ANYBODY ELSE. HAPPY WIFE, HAPPY LIFE WAS TRUE WAY BEFORE WHAT EVER FLAVOR OF THE HOUSEWIFE SHOW. YOU NEED TO BE SEXUALLY SATISFIED WITH YOUR MATE, EMOTIONALLY SECURE AND IN A RIGHT FRAME OF MIND IN EACH COUNSELING SESSION, IF YOU HAD A FIGHT WITH YOUR WIFE CONSIDER CANCELING ALL THE WOMEN COMING IN FOR COUNSELING.

EIGHTH, WEIRD STUFF HAPPENS, BE PREPARED. SINCE I ALWAYS CARRY A GUN I ALWAYS HAVE FIRST AID KITS IN MY OFFICE, MY CAR, AT HOME. AND I’M NOT TALKING THE GROCERY STORE, BAND-AIDS AND TYLENOL KIT. TRAUMA KIT WITH THE TRAINING. WHY, I TELL YOU. I HAD A WOMAN STALKING ME, SENDING ME PRESENTS, PICTURES IN THE MAIL (THIS WAS BEFORE THE INTERNET) SHOWING UP FOR APPOINTMENTS SEDUCTIVELY DRESSED. I TOLD HER BECAUSE OF HER BEHAVIOR I COULD NO LONGER SEE HER. HER HUSBAND BEGGED ME TO KEEP SEEING HER BECAUSE SHE SAID SHE WOULD KILL HERSELF IF I DID NOT SEE HER.

I TOLD HER NO, ONLY IF HER HUSBAND WAS WITH HER. SHE SHOWED UP AT MY OFFICE, PULLED OUT A LITTLE COLT .25 AUTO PISTOL AND SHOT ME. I BOUNCED HER OFF THE WALL SO HARD I KNOCKED HER OUT. MY SECRETARY CALLED THE POLICE AND AN AMBULANCE. FIRST AID KIT SAVED MY LIFE.

NINTH, FUNNY STUFF HAPPENS, I AM A CERTIFIED SEX THERAPIST. FOR GOOD AND THE BAD. A WOMAN IS BOOKED FOR SEVERAL COUNSELING SESSIONS AND EVENTUALLY SHE TELLS ME SHE HAS BEEN MARRIED 20 YEARS AND NEVER HAD A CLIMAX. SHE HAS BEEN EXAMINED BY A DOCTOR AND ALL THE RIGHT PARTS ARE THERE. I HAVE HER HUSBAND COME IN WITH HER AND WE HAVE TWO SESSIONS ON HAVING GREAT SEX. TWO WEEKS LATER HER AND THE HUSBAND VISIT MY CHURCH AND AFTER THE SERVICE I’M BY THE DOOR SHAKING HANDS, MY WIFE IS NEXT TO ME AND CAROL JUMPS INTO MY ARMS WITH GREAT ENTHUSIASM PROCLAIMS, “THANKS TO YOU PASTOR I HAD MY FIRST ORGASM LAST NIGHT.”

NEVER DAWNS ON HER WHAT JUST TRANSPIRED, HUSBAND JUST SHAKES MY HAND AND HEADS OUT TO THE PARKING LOT. NEXT GUY UP FOR A HAND SHAKE IS THE OLDEST MAN LIVING ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH, HE SHAKES MY HAND AND WITH A BIG SMILE SAYS, “WELL, YOU YOUNGER PASTORS SURE DO THINGS DIFFERENT THAN IN MY TIME.

TENTH, WOMEN DISROBING, AND TELLING ME THEY WANT TO HAVE MY BABY. OR WOMEN TELLING ME THEY SEE HOW GREAT MY MARRIAGE IS AND HOW HAPPY MY WIFE IS, LEAVE HER AND MARRY ME. REALLY????

ELEVENTH, BE VERY KIND WHEN DURING COUNSELING A YOUNG MAN TELLS YOU HE IS IN LOVE WITH YOU. DO NOT SAY OR DO ANYTHING STUPID. BE VERY, VERY KIND. BUT BE CAREFUL HOW YOU HANDLE THE SITUATION.

SO BE PREPARED EVERY DAY WILL SURPRISE YOU.

GOD BLESS FROM SCUMLIKEUSCHURCH@GMAIL.COM

TURNING POINT

August 21, 2021

“He has created us through our union with Christ Jesus for doing good deeds which He beforehand planned for us to do” (Eph. 2:10, Williams.).

The turning point in our Christian life comes when we begin to “let God be God,” the day we throw all caution (fear) to the winds and look to Him to carry out His purpose for us in His own time and way.

Our Father never does a thing suddenly: He has always prepared long, long before. So there is nothing to murmur about, nothing to be proud of, in the calling of God. There is also no one of whom to be jealous, for other people’s advantages have nothing to do with us. ‘It is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that hath mercy’ (Rom. 9:16). Our heritage, our birth, our natural equipment: these are things already determined by God. We may pick up other things in the way, for we are always learning; but the way is His way. When we look back over our life, we bow and acknowledge that all was prepared of God. To have such an attitude of heart, that is true rest.

“Let us take care lest we get out of soul-rest in seeking further blessing. God cannot work whilst we are anxious, even about our spiritual advance. Let us take Him at His Word, and leave the fulfillment of it to Him.”

“For it is God Himself whose power creates within you the desire to do His gracious will and also brings about the accomplishment of the desire” (Phil. 2:13, Weymouth.).
